Awaken
Today I finished Awaken by Meg Cabot. This is the third book in the Abandon trilogy (Abandon, Underworld, Awaken). The trilogy is about a teenage girl name Pierce who has a NDE (near death experience) and escapes from the underworld. After her NDE, strange things, continue to happen to her.
I like most of what Meg Cabot writes, both adult and young adult, and this trilogy was no exception. She writes about characters that you can root for...you want them to win no matter what situations they encounter. What I really love about this series is that it is based on the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades. It is not a re-telling of the myth, but a modern day throw-back to the story.
My rating for the series - 4 out of 5 stars.

Thirteen Days to Midnight
My third beach read for the week was Thirteen Days to Midnight by Patrick Carman. The book is about a teenager named Jacob. "You are indestructible. Three whispered words transfer an astonishing power to Jacob Fielding that changes everything. At first, Jacob is hesitant to use the power, unsure of its implications. But there's something addictive about testing the limits of fear." It is a great mystery that asks the question...if you could pick any superpower, what would it be?
I am a HUGE Patrick Carman fan because his books are great and I was able to meet him when he visited GCMS in 2011. Some of my favorites from him are the Skeleton Creek series and Pulse, a dystopian fiction.
Also, as I was sitting on the beach, I tweeted that I was reading his book. He tweeted me back!!!! See below!

Fault in our Stars
WOW!! I finished The Fault in our Stars by John Green yesterday. It was an amazing book and I can see why all of my students love it so much. The book is about two teenagers who are fighting cancer and the struggles they go through as they face the issues that come with having cancer. There is humor, love, and sadness. If you have not picked this one up...it is a must read. 4 out of 5 stars!

One and Only Ivan
My first book I read while at the beach was The One and Only Ivan by Katerine Applegate. This is the story of a gorilla named Ivan who lives in his domain at a shopping mall. His only friends are Stella, and elderly elephant, Bob, a stray dog, and Julie, the daughter of the night janitor at the mall. Ivan is content living in his domain, talking with Stella and Bob, and being an artist until Ruby, a baby elephant joins the other animals at the mall. It is a really neat story told from Ivan's point of view. 3.5 out of 5 stars!
